Questions, bugs or ideas: write to

Say which iPhone or iPad and iOS, and the step where it went wrong.

The count sounds late on my Bluetooth headphones or speaker.

Bluetooth audio arrives later than the screen and haptics, often by a fifth of a second or more. Count Studio corrects for each speaker or headphones it knows. To match yours exactly, open Settings > Bluetooth delay and tap the pad each time you hear the click (16 taps). Count Studio then counts early by that amount whenever that speaker is connected. The iPhone speaker and wired headphones need no calibration.

Why can’t I import songs from Apple Music or Spotify?

Songs from streaming services are protected (DRM), so no app can read their sound. Import songs you own as files (MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV, AIFF or FLAC) from the Files app, use the sound of a video, or share a voice memo to Count Studio.

For streaming music, use Listen mode: play the song on any speaker, tap the microphone in Songs, and Count Studio finds the beat live and counts along. Tap once on the 1 to set where the eight starts. Listening happens on your device and nothing is recorded.

I changed phones. How do I get Repertoire back?

Repertoire is a one-off purchase, kept by whichever Apple Account paid. On the replacement or reset iPhone or iPad, open the App Store under that Apple Account, then in Count Studio tap Settings > Repertoire > Restore. With Family Sharing, the rest of your family gets Repertoire too, on their own devices. Refunds are Apple’s decision: ask at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Where does Count Studio keep my songs and count sheets?

In a Count Studio folder inside your iCloud Drive, when iCloud Drive is on. The Files app opens it, and any other device using that Apple Account sees the same files. With iCloud Drive off, the files stay in Count Studio’s folder on the device, which Files shows too.

Count sheets, your own counts, setlists and presets are .cahier files, and each song is a folder holding the music file and its analysis. There’s no sync switch to manage: Apple stores what is in iCloud Drive, and nothing goes to Kallos Labs. Erasing your data in Count Studio’s Settings deletes these files.

Warning

Flash mode: photosensitive epilepsy warning.

Flash mode lights the whole screen yellow on the 1 and blue on accents, in time with the music, up to several times a second. Bright, fast flashes can set off seizures for anyone with photosensitive epilepsy.

If you, or anyone in view of the screen (a class watching the iPad counts), has epilepsy or has ever had a seizure, keep Flash mode off and count with haptics or sound. Stop at once if anyone feels dizzy, has blurred vision, twitching or disorientation.

Count Studio asks before Flash turns on for the first time.

Does Count Studio need an account or the internet?

Neither. Nobody signs up for anything, and counting, beat finding and Listen mode run with no connection.

Which dance styles and counts are included?

Every style on the home page, from 8-counts with “&” to salsa, ballroom, swing, Kathak and Carnatic talas, flamenco compás, Irish, Balkan, belly dance and fitness counts: see them all, written the way dancers count them. Custom patterns cover anything else, in any meter, grouping, accents and rests.
